The entry from Ward's
Journal giving an account of his Wedding Day.
The year is 1802.
The text reads:
'Monday May 10th In
the evening sister Fountain & I was married at our house
in the presence of our Bengalee friends etc.. This marriage had
been intended for some time, but circumstances hindered . The
marriage covenant ceremony was of my own choosing. Bro. C opened
the business by a few words of introduction & then read the
marriage agreement. I then took Sister F by the hand, & walked
up to the table, saying, We sign this our solemn covenant to
each other. We then signed it, & about a dozen brethren &
friends European & native added their signatures. Then Bro.
C made a very appropriate address to the married couple on the
duties of husband & wife & made a very pleasant allusion
to our family situation in which all personal interests were
swallowed up in the interest of the whole. The whole was concluded
with a short prayer by Bro. Carey. I gave some fruit & a
few things of native manufacture amongst the native friends and
thus the marriage was celebrated.'
